Snowshoeing in Montenegro

Get ready for a walk in the snow!

Follow the footsteps of ancestors of Montenegro, whose walls had snowshoes on them. This traditional walking, which was once a way of life during the winter season in the mountains, became one of the most beautiful recreational activities. You can leave your footprints in the snows of Durmitor Mountain as well as Bjelasica Mountain (Durmitor National Park-Žabljak, Biogradska gora National Park- Kolašin).

Durmitor National Park offers marked trails that are ideal for snowshoeing and suitable to all ages. This trail requires about two hours of walking in both directions. Going from Crno jezero (Black Lake), the largest of eighteen glacial lakes of Durmitor Mountain, the trail will take you through the spruce and fir forest right up to the ski centre Savin kuk. The routes between Crno jezero and Zminje jezero (Snake Lake) and between Zminje jezero and Žabljak (the highest urban settlement in the Balkans) are particularly interesting. Southern routes go from Mojkovac towards Biogradsko Lake, situated in the middle of one of the last three primeval forests in Europe (Biogradska gora National Park). Also, Bjelasica routes include the direction Jezerine-mountain peak of Zekova glava, Ključ (the southernmost ridge of Bjelasica Mountain) – Kolašin.

Twelve municipalities in the northern part of Montenegro will have three snowshoeing trails each.
