The Black Lake is the largest glacial lake in the Durmitor National Park. The nearest town to it, Žabljak, is 3km away. There is a walking trail around the entire lake which is very popular with tourists. This trail is 3.5km long. There are many other hiking trails in the area as well. The Black Lake has a narrow strait that dries up in summer dividing the lake into two.
The lake is surrounded by a dense pine forest which is reflected in the perfectly clear water. During winter the water will freeze over. In summer the water remains cool but those that are brave enough can go for a swim. It is also possible to rent boats there or to enjoy a meal at a nearby restaurant that serves traditional Montenegrin dishes.
The Zminje Lake is a small glacial lake in the Durmitor National Park. It is also known as Snake Lake. The lake is surrounded by fir trees. There is a popular walking trail through the forests leading from Black Lake up to Zminje Lake.
There’s a picnic spot at Zminje Lake and in general it is quieter with less tourists than Black Lake. There is also a walking trail around the lake and a well with spring water.
The Biograd Lake is in the Biogradska Gora national park on the Bjelasica Mountain. It is the largest glacial lake in this park. It is surrounded by forests and there are more than 80 different types of trees in the area. The water appears blue-green due to the reflections of all these trees.
There is a visitors’ center close to the lake and one can hike around the lake or take a boat. The Biograd river and Bendovac stream keeps this lake filled. The area is strictly controlled so as not to disturb its natural heritage.
Lake Plav is the largest lake in the Plav area of Montenegro. It is located near to the Prokletije National Park and mountain ranges. It has very pure water and some even claim that the water has healing properties. This is due to the fast flowing rivers that refreshes the water on a continuous basis. The lake is surrounded by lush green vegetation.
This lake is used for fishing with a huge variety of fish. There are also many wild ducks and birds. During summer there’s a lot of water sports like boating, kayaking and water skiing as well as swimming. In winter it ices over and the activities change to winter ice-fishing and ice-skating. The area around the lake offers walking, hiking and mountain biking.
Lake Skadar is on the border of Albania and Montenegro. It is the largest freshwater lake in the Balkans. Seasonal floods and underwater springs causes the depth and mass of the water in this lake to constantly change.
On the Montenegro side Lake Skadar is part of a national park which ensures an abundance of wildlife, birds, wild tortoises, lizards and a lot of other creatures.
The lake is also used for fishing and restaurants in the area serve fish caught fresh that day from the lake. Fruit is also locally grown in the area. Activities include kayaking, hiking, swimming, exploring the caves, boat cruises and even wine tasting.
