Budva is a coastal city in Montenegro. The coastal area surrounding Budva is known as the Budva Riviera. This area has been developed over the years to be a premier holiday destination.
The Riviera consists of many villages, hamlets and settlements and has a large variety of beaches that are worth visiting including the 1.6km long beach at Becici. Some of the beaches are sandy, some have pebbles, some are secluded while others are tourist hotspots. It’s up to the visitor to decide what experience they want to have here. If spending the day on the beach is not your thing there’s also a lot of sightseeing available in the area, including the old town, museums, galleries, monasteries and other ancient structures. There’s a vibrant night life with music, theatre, movies and concerts. Many of the hotels will also arrange their own functions especially on important holiday dates. Expect open air concerts and festivals in the summer.
The Kotor Riviera has a rich cultural heritage and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Riviera extends across culturally significant sites like Risan Bay and includes fishing villages and seaside resorts. Further along from Risan Bay you’ll find Perast, Donji Orahovac, Ljuta, Dobrota, Plagente, Kotor, Muo, Prčanj and Stoliv.
Not only is this area historically significant especially since it has had so many rulers over the years, it also has an abundance of natural beauty which is not limited to the coast but also includes thriving forests
The Herceg Novi Riviera comprises 7 villages and covers a length of 15km. The villages are Meljine with only about 1000 inhabitants, Lazaretto that was built by the Venetians using stones in the 18th century, Zelenika, Kumbor, Boasic and Bijela that has been around since the 14th century and is considered to be a spiritually significant area. Then there’s Kamenari with its legendary stonemasons and also the Luštica peninsula.
The most famous destination is probably Igalo and the Igalo Mediterranean Medical Centre. This is because of the discovery of somewhat radioactive mud in the area that is believed to have healing properties.
The residence of the former president of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito is also located here inside a lush park that shelters it from prying eyes.
The town of Tivat is situated at the top of the Bay of Kotor. Together with the surrounding areas of Lepetane, Opatova, Donja Lastva, Kalimanj, Župa, Bjelila and Krašići they form the Tivat Riviera.
This Riviera is famous for its beaches and there are many along its jagged coastline including the renowned Blue Horizon beach. There are also three islands in this area which are St Marko, Our Lady of Mercy and the Island of Flowers.
