National Park Durmitor
The Durmitor National Park is an area of 339 square kilometers and consists of 23 peaks of the Durmitor Mountains, as well as three rivers including the Tara River canyon that is just over 1 300 meters deep at its deepest point, making it Europe’s deepest canyon. There are also many glacial lakes.
The Durmitor mountain range is a key part of the Montenegrin tourist offering. During winter it is covered in snow and the ideal playground for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoe hiking and similar activities. During the summer months its ideal for hiking and mountain climbing. The highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, has a height of just over 2 500 meters.
On the rivers the activities include rafting, fishing, swimming and camping. However, this park is perfect just for sight-seeing. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites and is truly beautiful. You can drive along some of the roads although they are winding and narrow mountain- roads. There are many facilities and restaurants available.
Biogradska Gora National Park
This National Park is the smallest of the national parks in Montenegro but it is the most important because of the Biogradska Gora rainforest, one of only three rainforests that are left in Europe.
This is a mountainous area in the region of Bjelasica that is teeming with wildlife, plants, birds, insects and fish.
Sightseeing is top of the list of things to do here. Experience forests in their natural states, large mountains with peaks that are 2000 meters high, glacial lakes, streams and the Tara and Lim rivers. There are also rich green pastures where cattle and sheep still graze. Other things to do include fishing, skiing in winter and mountaineering. Most of the tourist activities consist of walking around the Biograd lake where there is a visitors’ center and a restaurant. However, this park is 56.5 km² and in an environment that extends to 194.7 km². There’s a lot more to it than just that!
Lovćen National Park
The Lovćen national park is situated in the Lovćen mountain range in the Dinaric Alps. This area has abundant fauna and flora. There are also forests of pine, beech and conifer trees.
Popular activities here are Nordic skiing and hiking although most people will go there just for the spectacular view of the Bay of Kotor, the sea, Skadar Lake and the surrounding areas. It is also possible to reach the summit by car.
The mausoleum of Petrović Njegoš, a Montenegrin ruler and poet, is in this park and there are 461 steps leading up to this building from the car park. There are also some historical buildings like shepherds’ summer huts in this park. The administrative center for this national park is in Cetinje.
