Rivers in Montenegro

#1.Lim River

The Lim River starts in the Kući area of Eastern Montenegro only about a kilometer away from the Tara river.One of the most famous rivers in Montenegro. At this point it is known as the Vrmoša river. Several countries and several name changes later it emerges again in Montenegro as the Lim river flowing close to the towns of Andrijevica and Berane.

This river flows through a stunning landscape and there are spectacular views all along the river. It is popular for rafting, especially whitewater rafting and kayaking. There are also a number of historical sites on the banks of the river. In addition, there’s an abundance of fish in its waters and this river is one of the best places for fly fishing.

#2.Sušica River

The Sušica river and lake are in the Durmitor mountain range. This river carved out a deep canyon by the same name which is 10km long. It too flows through exceptionally beautiful scenery like rocky terrains and forests. You can also view the Skalala Waterfalls from this river.
This river is perfect for sightseeing, rafting and fishing.

#3.Tara River

The Tara river is probably Montenegro’s most famous river. It flows from the Dinaric Alps of Montenegro. This river has created the Tara River Canyon, the longest canyon in Montenegro and only 2nd to the Grand Canyon in the USA. The Tara Canyon is part of the Durmitor National Park and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The most popular activity on this river is rafting with many different tours and expeditions on offer. Certain sections of the river have smooth flowing water while certain sections are ideal for whitewater rafting.  However, just for pure sightseeing this river is tops! The Tara river is also full of fish, which makes fishing a popular activity here. There’s also other tourist attractions including ziplining.

 

#4.Piva River

The Piva River is in the Southwest of Montenegro near the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This river, like all the others, flows through some of the most beautiful and pristine mountains and forests in the world. It too has created a canyon that is a sight to behold. The water from this river was dammed to be used for hydroelectric power. This is known as the Piva Lake and is one of the highest reservoirs in the world.  Rafting and canoeing activities take place on this lake. It’s one of Montenegro’s hidden gems with a tranquil and quiet environment surrounded by incredible scenery.
